KENHA finalises road expansion plans to ease Nairobi traffic

The Kenya National Highways Authority has finalised plans to expand strategic roads in Nairobi to ease traffic flow.

The project, which has been divided into three sections, is set to kick off in December.

The objective is to decongest JKIA through Westlands and all the way to Rironi, said David Muchilwa, KENHA acting general manager in charge of special projects.

"The designs have been approved and are only awaiting ratification from the World Bank before we go to tender," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The project is financed by the World Bank through the National Urban Transport Improvement Project.

The first section stretches from the JKIA to the Likoni Road junction at the Southern Bypass interchange.

Section two starts from the Likoni Road junction to the one at James Gichuru Road on Waiyaki way near ABC place, where section three to Rironi will start.

Likoni road will be connected to James Gichuru with the construction of an elevated dual carriageway.

The project includes the construction of an artistic interchange at the Nyayo Stadium roundabout.

The interchange will allow free movement of vehicles plying Mombasa and Lang'ata roads and make access to the CBD easier.

Muchilwa said rapid transit lanes for buses, and an inland container depot at the JKIA trun-off will also be constructed.

“We had to find a better way of moving people along the highways and major Nairobi roads by a well-organised bus system using dedicated lanes. Thats why we came up with the BTR which will be faster and efficient,” he said.
