Turkana County will receive the largest share of the Sh3 billion Equalisation Fund established to prop up development in marginalised areas.

The Commission on Revenue Allocation Wednesday said it had identified 14 counties that will benefit from the funds, with Turkana receiving Sh271 million.

The money, according to Prof Raphael Kimura, a commissioner, will be utilised in starting development projects in the marginalised areas to bring the quality of services to the level generally enjoyed by the rest of the nation.

The funds are expected to be put into projects in the water, roads, health and energy sectors.

The other counties that will receive the funds are Mandera, which has been allocated Sh249 million, Wajir (Sh240m), Marsabit (Sh228m), Samburu (Sh224m), West Pokot (Sh223m), Tana River (Sh221m) and Narok (Sh208m).

Others are Kwale (Sh205m), Garissa (Sh202m), Kilifi (Sh197m), Taita Taveta (Sh194m), Isiolo (Sh192m), and Lamu which will receive Sh186 million.

Disbursements from the fund will be channelled through county governments, which will be responsible for ensuring implementation of the selected projects.
