China keen on redefining bilateral ties with Kenya - kenyadetails

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday met and held talks with Chinese Ambassodor Liu Guangyuan who paid him a courtesy call at State house Nairobi.

 During the meeting, President Uhuru and the Chinese Ambassador discussed a wide range of areas in which Kenya and China could

cooperate including energy, infrastructure and agriculture.

On energy, the Chinese envoy pledged China’s support to the Government of Kenya’s efforts to increase geothermal power generation.

The President said China’s support in geothermal power production would also help in lowering the cost of energy and attract investments.

Mr Guayuan said China was also ready to share with Kenya its vast experience in infrastructure development.

Noting that Kenya and China have enjoyed cordial relations for the last 50 years, the Chinese Ambassador said his Government was keen on redefining

 the bilateral ties between the two countries into a strategic partnership.

President Uhuru welcomed China’s support in the implementation of Vision 2030 flagship projects including the development of the railway

 network from Lamu to Southern Sudan and Ethiopia, and the development of the first three berths and associated infrastructure of the Lamu Port.

The President and the Chinese Ambassador also discussed how Kenya and China could cooperate in the construction of a standard gauge railway line

 from Mombasa to Malaba and the building of a mass transit light railway system for the Nairobi Metropolitan.

They also explored areas of cooperation in agriculture, citing irrigation, machinery and high yield crops as key areas of focus.

The President expressed optimism that cooperation with the Chinese Government will enable his Government fulfils key pledges it made to the people of Kenya, especially with respect to the one-million acre

 irrigation project.

Present were Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and her Transport and Infrastructure counterpart, Eng Michael Kamau.
