Kenya: National Airline Buys Embraers for Africa Expansion - kenyadetails

KENYA Airways is targeting the under-served markets in Africa to boost its growth through the use of mid range aircraft, it said on Thursday.

Kenya Airways has ordered for several Embraer jets that it said are suited to regional routes with the latest one being delivered on Thursday. The aircraft has a capacity of between 98 to 106 passengers.

“As the African economy emerges and the demand for intra-Africa travel and trade rises, we see major opportunities to tap news markets and to address suppressed demand in existing routes,” said KQ chief executive Titus Naikuni.

He was peaking on Thursday evening at a cocktail party to celebrate the delivery of the latest E-Jet from Embraer. The latest E-jet is the third out of the ten that were acquired using funds raised from the rights issue held earlier in the year.

According to Africa Airline Association, there are about 660 regional and domestic city-pairs in Africa, more than half (51.4 per cent) of which are served by less than five flights a week.
