Cargo flow at key border town now back to normal - kenyadetails

Cargo traffic at Malaba border town has finally returned to normal after a two-week downtime as traders suspended operations amid election jitters.

Mr Lewis Olinyo, a clearing agent at the town that borders Uganda, on Monday said that activities resumed to full

capacity at the weekend.

This was after it became clear there was not going to be any violence brekout following announcement of the presidential poll results.

“We had a week and a half of no work as transporters grounded their vehicles as they awaited the announcement of the results.

“Now they have resumed transportation of cargo,” said Mr Olinyo.

Pile up of trucks

Resumption of cargo movement has seen an increase in traffic along the Malaba-Bungoma highway, with a pile up of cargo trucks at the border point.

Cargo movement at the town is expected to significantly increase going forward as many exporters resume fulltime operations.

“The increase in cargo uptake means that we will have more cargo trucks crossing over to Uganda on transit to other neighbouring countries,” said Mr. Olinyo.

Kenya Revenue Authority officials at Malaba border said that they were working round the clock to serve the increased traffic.
