Government invests Shs.560 million in off grid power projects

Kenya Power is developing renewable power projects in North Eastern and Rift Valley at a total cost of Shs.560 million to complement diesel generation in areas not connected to the national grid (off grid).
 
Once all are operational, the solar and wind power projects will help Kenya Power reduce use of fuel that runs the off grid diesel generators, thereby saving an estimated Shs.50 million annually.

Kenya Power to use cash raised from proposed tariffs to build new plants

Kenya Power intends to use the funds raised from the planned tariff review to finance the set up of energy generation plants.

The tariff review, according to the electricity distributor, will enable it to offset the payment obligations for the power capacity from the plants which will be commissioned from next month.

A consortium – led by US developer of utility-scale solar power projects, SolarReserve – successfully secured financing for two 75MW solar photovoltaic (PV) parks that are to be built near Bloemfontein and Kimberley in South Africa. The projects, predicted to be completed by mid-2014, are expected to power over 50,000 homes with renewable energy.
