Traffic alerts are now available to Kenyans on Google Maps
Google Maps is a really handy feature from the search giant that enables you to navigate to some place or just know wherever you are. It has several features baked in like Navigation, various transport options, offline maps capability and also advising you on the traffic conditions.
Speaking of the Traffic conditions functionality, it has been there for a while now, but mostly in developed countries. In Africa, or specifically in Kenya, we've not had the functionality on Google Maps since we started using the service until we noticed something interesting on November last year.
Cytonn to construct US$ 25m apartments in Kenya
Cytonn Chief Investment Officer Elizabeth Nkukuu confirmed the news and said that the apartments which will be built in Ruaka on the outskirts of Nairobi will target the middle to lower-middle income class with a discerning preference for modern day apartments.
Our deal pipeline is to serve different sectors of the real estate market ranging from the high end, such as the Amara Ridge whose construction is still going on in Karen, the middle to lower-middle income such as The Alma, which will offer a very comprehensive lifestyle and secure community to the future families, said Nkukuu.
The multi-million lifestyle community will constitute 408 modern apartments with 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms, a commercial facility, a lifestyle clubhouse and an elevated playground for children.
Safaricom to manage Kenya Power's fibre-optic network
Kenya Power is angling to connect 12,000 homes in Nairobi to the Internet through its fibre-optic network in a 12-month pilot stage that has already kicked off.
The firm has identified Safaricom as its partner in the project, and through its subsidiary Kenya Power International, the three signed a memorandum of understanding ushering in the project.
While Safaricom will invest in the fibre business and recover its investment through a lease agreement that is yet to be signed, Kenya Power will provide its vast infrastructure covering 4,000km in length of fibre-optic cable.
Kenya receives $30 million funding towards two projects in Menengai
Reported just before the weekend in local media and in a press release, Kenya has – with support by the African Development Bank (AfDB) received approval from the Climate Investment Funds Clean Technology Fund (CIF-CTF) for a US $29.65-million concessional loan to co-finance up to two geothermal projects of combined up to 70 MW in capacity in Menengai.
The Concessional Finance Program for Geothermal Generation will build on the energy advancements already underway in the successful development of the country's showcase Menengai Geothermal Field.
Huawei targets low and middle income earners with new devices
Mobile technology company Huawei has introduced three mid-level smart phones targeting low and middle-income earners, just a month after it launched its flagship device, Mate 8 targeting professionals.
During the launch Huawei Devices Kenya Country Manager Mark Hemaobin, said the company is keen on capturing all market segments by introducing devices that target low, middle and high-end customers in line with the changing consumer preferences.
Chinese Firm to Build Communication Solution for Kenya's Railway
Nairobi — Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei said Thursday it has won a major railway contract to build a train-to-ground communications solution fully integrated with train signal systems for Kenya's Mombasa-Nairobi railway line.
In a statement received in Nairobi, Huawei said it will provide the GSM-R dispatching communications network as well as backbone optical transmission network, clock and synchronization system, and power and environment monitoring system to the region.
After completion, the Mombasa-Nairobi railway line's GSM-R network will carry multiple communications tasks, including mission-critical train dispatch, emergency communications, section maintenance communications, and transmission of train control data along the entire line, the statement said.
Akiira project plans drilling start for two additional wells for June 2016
Reported today from Kenya, Akiira Geothermal Ltd, a consortium developing a geothermal power project in Naivasha, Kenya, is planning to invest an additional Sh1.4 billion ($14 million) for the drilling of two additional wells for its 70 MW project.
Drilling of two more wells will start in June in Akiira Valley in Naivasha, The project last month received a Sh138 million grant from the African Union Commission.
Exploration drilling of the first well will start early June to be possibly followed by a second one at a total cost of $14 million (Sh1.4 billion), said Robert Bunyi, the outgoing chief executive of Akiira.
