Timber-starved Kenya seeks new suppliers

A chronic timber shortage has hit Kenya forcing the country to turn to expensive imports from neighbouring countries.
Latest statistics indicate that the country spends more than Ksh3 billion ($37.5 million) annually on timber imports compared with Ksh4.9 million ($61,250) in 1999, to meet rising demand that now stands at 38 million cubic metres annually.

Kenya’s economy is unlikely to hit the 5.6 per cent economic growth rate in 2013 projected by the government earlier this year. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) the economy posted a 4.4 per cent growth in the third quarter of this year compared to growth rates seen in the previous two quarters.

World Bank increases Kenya funding

President Kenyatta said the bank funded public sector projects to the tune of $8.5 billion (Ksh722. 5 billion) and invested another US$4.3 billion (Ksh373.84 billion) to support 23 national and six regional projects to reduce the effects of climate change.

Spellman Brady & Company provided the furniture package for Webster University’s new Ghana campus in Accra, Ghana. Accra is the capital of Ghana, a major hub in West Africa and one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa.
The fast-track delivery of the furniture was critical in order for the University to be guaranteed a license by the Ghana Ministry of Higher Education in time for a spring semester opening. Equally important for the campus was brand consistency with Webster University’s educational classroom standards used on the St. Louis and its extended campuses.
To meet both of these challenges, Spellman Brady & Company specified furniture from an existing furniture inventory in Elgin, IL that matched the University’s standards.
