China to help Kenya boost food production

The Chinese Government has pledged to support Kenya in food production.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang said his Government will assist in seed production and irrigation.
He spoke when he met Deputy President William Ruto at his Harambee House Annex office.
“We believe that what should not happen to us should not happen to another person. Hunger is not good that’s why we will assist you improve food production,” Keqiang said.
He said Chinese companies will invest in agriculture technology in Kenya.

Ace Nollywood star and chairman, board of directors of the National Institute for Hospitality & Tourism (NIHOTOUR), Mr Kanayo O. Kanayo, has described Nigeria as having the best variety of food on the African continent.
He said: “Africa is blessed but Nigeria is more blessed in the area of variety of food.”
Kanayo spoke on Tuesday on the occasion of the pre-event press conference held by NIHOTOUR for the institute’s planned national food and cultural fair, billed to hold from June 24 to 26, 2014 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Kenya could quadruple central bank capital

The Central Bank of Kenya could receive an injection of $170 million from the government if a new bill designed to hand the central bank greater independence is adopted by the national assembly.
The central bank has, at present, five billion shillings ($57 million) in authorised capital. Under the proposed Central Bank of Kenya Act 2014, this would quadruple to 20 billion shillings.
Recapitalisation can be a sensitive issue. Both the Bank of Uganda and the Bank of Mauritius were made to wait for capital injections they were entitled to receive from their respective governments.
Should the Central Bank of Kenya's capital levels fall below the 20 billion shillings, the government would be obliged to transfer the necessary "currency or negotiable debt instruments" within a period of "no more than 30 calendar days".

The way to a Kenyan's heart is through his stomach. Chinese restaurants are offering Kenyans diverse cuisine to their taste buds.
Eliud Ekiring is a chef who has worked at Fang Fang, a Chinese restaurant in Nairobi, for seven years. He learned the Chinese cuisine as a quite exotic skill, just because he loves it.
As most of his local colleagues did, he has learned the art through experience while serving in the kitchen under the tutelage of the Chinese restaurant owners. It took him about six months to be fully compliant in the skill.
"Although I cannot say that I can cook all types of Chinese foods, I am very conversant with those that are served in the eating place. However, given a recipe, it wouldn't take me long to come up with a tasty meal," Ekiring said.
More and more Chinese restaurants pop up in Kenya, especially in Nairobi, an indication that the Chinese presence in Kenya is not only technological, but also gastronomical.
TFAA 2012 nominee chairs Agriculture committee at the Euro-African Youth Parliament in Germany

The Euro Youth African Parliament (EYPA) will be holding in Berlin, Germany between March 27 – April 4, 2014. This event will be the first conference of its kind with over 60 alumni of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) will come together in Berlin and meet 60 participants from Africa.
One of the delegates expected to be at the conference is Sola Amusan, a 2012 TFAA nominee in the Agriculture category of Entrepreneur of the Year. Amusan will be chairing the agriculture, food security and rural affairs committee with co-chair, Megan Smith representing Ireland.
The EYPA is a project mutually organised by the German Schwarzkopf Foundation based in Berlin together with the Youth Bridge Foundation from Accra, Ghana.
