Japan Lends Kenya Sh28 Billion for Mombasa Port Expansion

Expansion project at the port of Mombasa received a major boost after the Japanese government agreed to fund part of the second phase of the second container terminal, currently under construction. The government of Japan has extended to the Kenyan government a $270 million ODA loan, approximately Sh24.7 billion, towards the second phase of the Mombasa port development project.

Treasury cabinet secretary Henry Rotich and his transport counterpart Michael Kamau, on Friday, led KPA management in the signing and exchanging of notes with Japan ambassador to Kenya Tatsushi Terada at the port headquarters. According to Rotich, the fund will be used for the construction of the new container terminal berth number 22, procurement of equipment and consulting Services.

"This is a high priority and critical project whose completion will enhance container handling capacity at the Port and provide handling equipment to facilitate trade and economic development in Kenya and the neighboring countries in East, Central and the Horn of Africa," said Rotich. He said the project will also complement the ongoing Mombasa port area road development project, contributing to higher economic development of the country.
